Postcard from Gibraltar Friday Photo Challenge (Week 41) Nocturnal

This week’s photo challenge theme is ‘nocturnal’ and here’s one of our little nighttime visitors. These geckos crawl around on our frosted glass windows on summer nights waiting to pounce on any moths which may pass by. It’s like watching a nature documentary unfolding on our kitchen and bathroom windows some nights, and rather gruesome at times.

We do have bats too, but they wouldn’t oblige and stay still long enough for me to photograph them!

Next week’s theme is: curve.

Friday photo challenge (week 40) Purple & a super-duper summer round-up!

This week’s photo challenge theme is ‘purple’, I spied this autumn crocus on my Monday morning walk up the Rock. But how about some purple stalactites? You can find them in St Michael’s Cave…

I spotted this purple Bee in Manchester, you can read all about the Bees here.

I just love a hydrangea…

And a little purple plant I painted at watercolour class…

So that’s this week’s photo challenge entry done, now to take a look back at what everyone else has been up to over the summer:

As things got a bit hectic at times during the summer I didn’t manage to do a monthly round-up, so here’s a mega round-up of some of the entries to the weekly Postcard from Gibraltar Friday photo challenge (the photos are from Instagram and were taken by other people taking part in the Postcard from Gibraltar Friday photo challenge), thank you to everyone who’s taken part!

Friday photo challenge (week 37) Pride

I’ve gone for national pride for this week’s Friday photo challenge. On Monday, Gibraltar celebrated it’s National Day, and both the place and the people were decked out in the red and white of the Gibraltar flag.

Shop windows looked suitably festive.

And some people went to great lengths to look the part…

Central to the day (aside from eating and drinking with family & friends) is the political rally, in which local and UK politicians speak to the gathered crowd and via TV and radio to those at home.

We even had a pre recorded message from Prime Minister Theresa May in Downing Street. The place was awash with red and white.

There were ticker tape & streamer cannons and even smoke things going off!

We were even treated to a death defying aerobatics display…. I could hardly watch…

And the day was finished off with a fireworks display.

Friday photo challenge (week 36) Waterways

When I think of waterways, it’s the Norfolk Broads which spring to mind. This summer, as we have done many times before, we visited the Broads while visiting family members who live near by.

This time though, we got up close and personal with the waterways and explored them by canoe. It was probably the best day of the holiday for me, it was quiet, calm and so beautiful to be able to slow down and take in all the surroundings. There were literally hundreds of dragon flies flitting about close to the surface of the water.

We also visited this stretch of the Broads at Burgh Castle (below), which has history right back to the Roman occupation of the area…

We enjoyed a particularly pretty sunset there from a Broadside pub beer garden!

Next week’s photo challenge is ‘pride’.

Friday photo challenge (week 33) Reflective

The word reflective can mean several things; a reflected image, light or heat, a geometrical transformation resulting in a mirror image and deep thought. So here’s examples of all of those things….

The first photo was taken on the beach in Spain, and was just so beautiful. We’d gone on a (rare) peaceful evening stroll along the beach and watched as the sun disappeared over the horizon. It’s at times like this that I find myself pondering the most important things in life.

Another sunset photo, this time in Toulouse in France while we were there on holiday last year. The River Garonne was so still and calm, a perfect surface to reflect the bridges and the Ferris wheel.

And finally, the Rock reflected in a wing mirror while heading off on a shopping trip earlier this week.

Next week’s Friday photo challenge is ‘Stitch’.

Friday photo challenge (week 32) Steps

I don’t wish to sound like a broken record, but for this photo challenge, there can only be one venue… the Med Steps!

For those of you who haven’t seen it already, here’s my most popular post of all time…. The Med Steps: a few facts & figures.

And I almost forgot, my second ever Stroll around Gibraltar post was about the many steps you can find on the Rock.

Friday photo challenge (week 31) Garden

I was racking my brains as to what to use for my photo challenge this week, when rather fortuitously we visited the most glorious garden yesterday. Somerleyton Hall in Suffolk sits slap bang in the middle of where our relations live, so it was the perfect place for a final meet up before heading home today to Gibraltar.

A popular venue for weddings, the current residents (Lord & Lady Somerleyton) decided to redesign their sunken garden with a predominantly white colour scheme. It is stunning.

It proved very popular for a pair of ducks…

Normally at the start of a new month I give a monthly round up linking to other participants’ photo challenge entries, however, as I’m on holiday, I haven’t had the chance. It will follow at a later date, I promise :-).

2018 Friday photo challenge (week 30) Seaside

Hmmm Seaside… looks like I planned this week’s Friday photo rather well… this week we’ve been to Aldeburgh’s pebble beach.

Sunny Southwold:

And sandy Sheringham beach…

The home of naughty seagulls who try to steal your chips! The postcard which came with my latest crochet project from Little Box of Crochet is very appropriate:

2018 Friday Photo Challenge (Week 29) Button

I’m rather partial to a pretty button. I put together the above picture from a selection of buttons at home. But that looked a bit boring, so here’s a selection of other types of buttons I have seen on my travels today….

Today, we caught a plane (with lots of buttons on it) to England.

And here’s a late edit…

… a rather lovely old fashioned button for a door bell.

Next week’s challenge is ‘seaside’.

2018 Friday photo challenge (Week 28) Favourite

Favourite… that’s a bit of a loose prompt. Favourite what? Well this photo seems to be a bit of a favourite over on Instagram – it’s had more likes than any other on my account. It dates back to April last year.

My favourite photo taken in Gibraltar has to be this one, taken after walking up through the mist and low cloud on the Med Steps.

My favourite pass time has to be crochet…

And my favourite finished blanket so far has to be this rainbow granny square one…

Next week’s photo challenge is button.
