Hello there, blimey we’re on day 10 of April already, I genuinely don’t know where the time has gone! Well I kind of do, I’ve just started a new job, so that has filled my time somewhat and my brain too for that matter, but for now, here’s a little look back at March in my world!

Belinda Bunny

Last month I launched another new pattern in my shop, in time for Easter, Belinda Bunny made an appearance. Inspired by our very own little Diamond bunny (as you can see) bunnies aren’t just for Easter….

I know many people won’t be interested in bunnies now that Easter is past but she’s there ready for next year with her little basket ready for a chocolate egg! If you’re interested in making your own Belinda, you can find her here.

The Crochet Sanctuary

White bunnies were clearly the flavour of the month in March as when I spent a wonderful day at the Crochet Sanctuary last month, this bunny wreath was one of the projects we made! The wreath is sitting on an, as yet, still unfinished cowl.

I had a really lovely day just sitting, chatting and crocheting – I feel like I’d been away on a holiday rather than just a few hours!

Holiday

Speaking of holidays… I got on a plane last month for a fabulous break in Spain.

Along with 4 lovely friends from my University days, we had a joint celebration of our 50th birthdays (no, that can’t be right surely?!). The sister of one of my friends has a house in Spain which she offered for us to use for our 4-night-long getaway. It was amazing!

Sadly the weather wasn’t great, but we didn’t go for the sun, we went to spend some time with each other. What with family commitments and work, it had been nearly 30 years since we’d spent that long together. Apart from being in bed no later than 1am and having a beautiful clean tidy house with lots of nutrious food – it was just like being back in our student flat!

Isn’t it wonderful when you have friends who know you so well that you can just pick up from where you left off no matter how long ago it was the last time you saw each other? I feel truly blessed to have them in my corner.

I wanted to give them all something to mark this momentous occasion, but couldn’t think what was suitable to buy – after drawing a blank I opted for making them each a little ‘Keele girl’ (we met at Keele University). I surreptitiously asked them all what colour swimming costume they were bringing with them and made them a coordinating mini costume. I based the pattern on the Crochet Iconic Women book by Carla Mitrani (I thought that was rather appropriate seeing as I think they’re all pretty iconic in my book).

We had lots of fun taking the mini crocheted girls out and about with us…

We had a right giggle – it was an amazing break.

Easter school holidays meant the need to get out and about in fresh air to get the young men in my life off devices and, for one, away from GCSE revision for a while and we had a few nice walks. This one was along the Bridgewater Canal towpath in Lymm. The weather in Cheshire was better than in Spain to be fair!!

Keep on Running!

I have mentioned in my monthly postcards before that I’ve been doing a bit of running lately, and that I was thinking of signing myself up for a 10K. As I was approaching the age of 50, I decided that if I was ever going to achieve a 10K, it was probably a good idea not to out it off for too much longer. I gave myself a talking to as I remembered having the same one way conversation as I hit 40, but didn’t achieve that goal.

It’s now official, I am signed up to run the 10K race on the day of the Great Manchester Run on 26th May. I’ve been training since before Christmas and once I managed to run 7K last week, I thought it was safe to go public and tell people.

I’m not sure I’ll be repeating the feat, so thought I’d better make it a worthwhile venture and have opted to raise funds for the Jo Cox Foundation. Last year, I did some work for them and I wanted to thank them for putting their faith in me, as well as helping them going forward with the amazing work they do to help build community relationships, supporting civility in public life and generally continuing the work started by Jo Cox.

For those of you who don’t know who Jo was, she was a wife, mother, MP (Member of Parliament) and humanitarian who was murdered while she was working in her constituency of Batley & Spen in West Yorkshire in 2016. Had Jo still been alive, like my friends and I, she would be celebrating her 50th birthday this year, so this seemed very appropriate.

Also in March, I managed to get a job! I’m thrilled and started the new position this week. It does mean I have a bit less time for podcasting etc, but I can pay the bills which always helps!!

Hello there! It’s the 1st of March – the first day of meteorological spring – how lovely! The days are slowly getting longer and that always puts a spring in my step. I hope this finds you well and that the past month has been kind to you. Here’s a little look back at what happened in my world in February.

A lovely gift to start the month

I started (and ended) the month as a ‘lady of leisure’ in other words I don’t have a job as such at the moment (other than freelance bits and bobs). I have to admit that at times I have found it a struggle. It’s not for the want of applying for jobs, I have spent a lot of time over the past couple of months filling in application forms, writing cover letters etc, but as yet, they haven’t borne fruit. I’m not sure whether it’s the state of the job market at the minute, the fact I’m not as young as I used to be or what, but as I write, I’m still looking.

On a positive note though, I did get a lovely parcel through the post, the yarn bowl pictured above was a gift from my former colleagues at my last place of work – they knew me well clearly! It has seen two projects completed using it (both of which are commissions I can’t share sadly) and is now home to my current make, which hopefully I will be able to share with you pretty soon.

My former colleagues were a really lovely bunch and I miss them but I can think of them whenever I’m using this yarn bowl.

Crochet Hearts

So this month, as well as making magazine commission samples, I made a few hearts and wrote a pattern! The pattern for this heart garland is now in my Etsy shop if you fancy giving it a go. Remember, hearts aren’t just for Valentine’s Day!

I also had a go at making a stripy rainbow heart using my free pattern here. This was fun to make and I have one hanging in the room I do most of my crochet – it makes me smile especially on grey wet days!

A half term trip to London

The school half term holidays fell last month and we made a trip down to London to visit Eldest. He’s studying there at University and it was the perfect opportunity for Son Number 2 to see what University accommodation is like as it won’t be terribly long before he’s thinking about such things – eek!

It was a really lovely day – and super to be able to give Eldest a squeeze too. We ended the day looking around the area where he’ll be moving to for the next academic year – how are we talking about such things already? Time is galloping on!

A sunny walk

Just 2 weeks after visiting him in London, Eldest had a reading week and made the trip up north to visit me and his brothers. We were very lucky to have some bright winter sunshine briefly so we dashed out for a walk before the next lot of rain came!

We had a lovely walk along part of the Trans Pennine Trail at Lymm in Cheshire. It was pretty busy as lots of other folk were making the most of the nice weather. After walking the trail for a while, we doubled back and went into Lymm itself. There’s a chippy there which does really rather fantastic chips which taste delicious with a slosh of vinegar, a sprinkling of salt and eaten out in the fresh air!

Sock darning

While Eldest was visiting, I darned a pair of his favourite socks for him. I mentioned it to my Mum and said I’d struggled to get the right colour of yarn and that his burgundy socks now had bright red toes! A day or so later, I received a package filled with sock yarn (some of which is specifically for darning) and my great grandma’s darning mushroom! Never again will I have to struggle and keep jabbing my fingers with the needle – and as long as future socks are grey or blue I should be sorted!

If only that mushroom to could speak and tell about all the socks which had been darned with its help. I shall treasure it, and am thrilled to be custodian of this family heirloom now.

In the long run

I started running (off and on) a few years ago. I did the Couch to 5K which is a miracle considering I was always vying for last place in school cross country races. I wasn’t built for speed! Once I’d got over the initial breathlessness and built up a bit of stamina, I was rather pleased with my progress and from time to time I start running again for a while.

I spotted these snow drops (above) when I was on a run early in February around the time I was considering upping my game a bit. You may be aware I celebrated a milestone birthday last month, and I wondered whether this was the year I should attempt a ‘real’ run. Now by real, I don’t mean a marathon or anything daft like that, more like a 10K.

I’ve thought about trying one, probably for 10 years, and I’m not getting any younger, so now is probably the time I need to stop procrastinating and give it a whirl. The picture below was taken of the picturesque Manchester Ship Canal at the end of my first proper training run – I managed to run for 10 minutes four times – which I impressed myself with.

I shall keep you posted on my progress and let you know if this is indeed the year for a 10K attempt. Watch this space!

Amigurumi Heart – Free Crochet Pattern & Step-by-Step Tutorial ❤️

As we approach 14th February, I thought maybe it would be nice to share a bit of crochet love.

This is a little pattern I have been working on and I thought I would share it with you. I’ve never been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day, so instead of it being all about the romantic kind of love, why not use it as a time to show someone special that they mean a lot to you?

So here’s my gift to you, a little amigurumi heart pattern for you to share with someone special or even to keep for yourself. Although, I have to admit, they come with a health warning – because once you start, it’s quite hard to stop! I have them in all colours around the house!

You will need:

  • Yarn – I used Scheepjes Catona shade 390
  • Hook – I used a 2.5mm hook for this project *
  • 2 Stitch Markers – place the stitch marker in the first stitch of every round and move it up on each round so you can keep track of where you are in the pattern.
  • Toy Stuffing 
  • Yarn needle – to weave in the ends

* Whatever weight of yarn you use, I recommend using a hook one size smaller than the one recommended on the ball band to give a tighter fabric. For example if you use DK weight yarn which has a 4mm hook recommendation, I would use a 3.5mm for this project.

Note: This heart is made using the amigurumi technique of crocheting in the round. You will need to use a stitch marker to mark the first st of each round and keep moving it into the first st of each new round as you work.

Stitches and abbreviations:

This pattern is written in UK terms.

Dc = Double crochet

Dc2tog = Double crochet 2 stitches together to decrease *

MC = Magic Circle

Rep = Repeat

Slst = Slip Stitch

St(s) = Stitch(es)

  • I prefer to decrease by putting my hook into the front loop only of the next two stitches, yarn over hook and pull it back through.

The pattern:

We begin the pattern at the top of the heart and work downwards. This means that we need to make two separate ‘bumps’ for the top, which are joined in Round 7.

‘Bump 1’

Round 1 Work 6Dc into a MC and pull tight (6)

Round 2  2Dc into every st around (12)

Round 3 [2dc, 1Dc into next 5 sts] rep (14)

Round 4 [2Dc, 1Dc into next 6 sts] rep (16)

Round 5 1Dc around (16)

Round 6 1Dc around (16) Fasten off and break yarn. Leave the SM in the first st of Round 6 so you know where to begin the join.

Don’t worry about weaving in any ends at this point as they will be hidden inside the finished heart.

‘Bump 2’ 

Repeat Rounds 1-6 of the first bump but do not break the yarn.

Once you have both ‘Bumps’ made, it’s time to join them together.

Round 7 Put your hook into the first st of the first ‘Bump’ after fastening off (marked with the SM – see photo above) – this will become the first st of this round so move the SM into this st once you have worked it. Work 1Dc into every st around ‘Bump 1’, then 1Dc into every st around ‘Bump 2’ (32)

Round 7 continued… By keep both stitch markers in place, it helps you see where you need to work your next stitch after the join on the other side.

Stop at this point and add some toy stuffing into the top of the heart.

Round 14 1Dc into next 4 sts, Dc2tog, 1Dc into next 9 sts, Dc2tog, 1Dc into next 5 sts (20)

Round 15 [Dc2tog, 1Dc into next 3 sts] rep around (16)

Round 16 [Dc2tog, 1Dc into next 2 sts] rep around (12)

Add some more stuffing at this point before the opening gets too small and stuff firmly.

Round 17 [Dc2tog, 1Dc] rep around (8)

Round 18 Dc2tog around (4)

❤️And there you have a little amigurumi heart!❤️

Fasten off and break yarn leaving a tail to stitch the point of the heart closed and weave in the end.

If you want your heart to have a hanging loop, make the tail long enough to be pushed up through the middle of the heart and sew into a loop.

If there is a hole at the top of the heart between the two ‘Bumps’ you can sew this closed with a stitch or two to hide the stuffing.

Ta-dah! One heart ready to be gifted or hung somewhere for everyone to enjoy!

Just be careful though…. before you know it, your house could be full of them!

A view from my New Year’s Day morning run in the sunshine

Hello and welcome to this Postcard from January, a month of winter weather, creativity, the end of one chapter and significant birthday.

New Year News!

I started the year with a lovely delivery through my letter box – the latest issue of Simply Crochet Magazine – and it’s got me in it!!

There I am in the middle of the top row with my microphone in a special feature about crochet podcasts! It was a thrill to be asked and even more of a thrill to actually see the article! Thank you Simply Crochet!

A significant birthday

So, this month I hit a bit of a birthday milestone… and I was very lucky to spend some time with lovely friends and family.

I had a gorgeous meal out with my immediate family and had several friends call round to see me too. I was even lucky enough to have some time on my birthday with Eldest before he had to catch the train back down to London to restart his university studies.

I had a lovely chocolatey birthday cake but couldn’t resist making a calorie free crochet one too! (I’m going to write up the pattern for it soon in case anyone else fancies making one!).

I received two beautiful bouquets of flowers which you can see above and below. I feel very lucky to have such lovely people around me.

Winter weather

It’s been a busy month weather wise in this part of the world. There have been named storms, torrential rain, snow and ice!

One morning in mid January we woke to a blanket of snow. I think I was more excited about it than the boys were! I popped out for a few minutes during a quick break from work and took some photos in my back garden.

The place just looked magical…

Even the bug hotel got a dusting!

Immediately after the snow had thawed (it lasted less than a day) we had quite a cold snap again with morning school runs that were well below zero. I don’t mind the cold though, when you get skies like this…

Two new hats

January was the month I finished my latest two projects – the hats which featured in my last post. If you missed it, you can find it here. I haven’t had the chance to wear one yet outside as they weren’t completely finished when it was super cold. There is a football match this weekend which Youngest is playing in though, so that may well be the time for one of them to make a debut!

Looking back…

My phone likes to surprise me from time to time with a throwback photo from the past and this one popped up this week. They are a few of the crochet bits I made for my first ever craft stall 9 years ago this month over in Gibraltar. Nine years on from the crocheted Jammie Dodgers and I’m still crocheting sweet treats! There was a heavy Attic24 influence to it and quite a lot of heart themed items as it was just a two weeks before Valentine’s Day on 31st January 2015.

Looking forward…

At the end of January I said goodbye to the lovely colleagues I’ve been working with for the past eight months. I had a contract to cover a maternity leave and it whizzed by. I’m now on the lookout for my next job, but am quite looking forward to having a little rest too. It does mean I’ll have more time for crochet so hopefully I’ll be able to share a bit more with you in the coming weeks!

While I’m busy crocheting and applying for jobs, I’ll be chomping through this lovely lot! This fantastic hamper of goodies was sent to me as a farewell gift from my lovely colleagues! I will really miss them, they are the best.

A Tale of Two Hats

Some of last week’s dusting of snow ❄️

The recent cold snap we’ve experienced in my part of the world reminded me that I’ve been meaning to write this post for weeks. I’ve been crocheting in earnest for well over a decade now making blankets, scarves, shawls, jumpers and a cardigan as well well as lots of little people. Despite that, I’d never made myself a hat. When it’s cold outside I always found myself reaching for the same shop-bought woolly hat I’d bought a long, long time ago. I decided that this winter it was time to put that right, and made not one, but two new hats!

I scoured my collection of pattern books and magazines and happened upon this lovely granny stripe hat from the Modern Granny Stitch Crochet book by Claudine Powley also known as Iron Lamb. I had been wanting to have a go at one of her beautiful granny jumpers but with magazine commissions and a knitted jumper in progress, I’d parked that idea for a while. There was nothing stopping me making a hat though – it would be a quick project, almost like a palette cleanser between my commissions.

Fortunately I have a decent stash of yarn these days thanks to a couple of Scheepjes boxes of smaller balls which I have acquired, so I rooted through them to find the right colours for a hat – I wanted something bright and colourful to cheer up a grey day spent standing on the football sidelines cheering my youngest and his team on. I hit on this bright cerise pink and dark turquoise along with the pale grey. The pattern was really clear and quick to make up. I’m really happy with how it turned out – at last I had an alternative to my old shop-bought number!

However, I found that hats are a bit like buses – you wait for ages for one to come along and then another one arrives in quick succession! Just as I was finishing off my Iron Lamb creation I saw a beautiful pattern release by Catherine of Catherine Crochets – the Down the Line Beanie.

In case you haven’t come across Catherine before (although I am sure you probably will have) she is known for her beautiful tapestry crochet blankets and accessories. Catherine was my guest on Making Stitches Podcast – you can find that episode here.

My Yarn Whisperer hand dyed yarn 🩷

I had some beautiful hand dyed yarn in my stash which I bought a while back from the Yarn Whisperer (another of my podcast guests!). It’s called ‘4 of Wands’ and I just loved the rainbow effect it gives.

I had started using it in a knitted shawl project which, unfortunately for the shawl, was just too tricky for me so it was put in the naughty pile. I was feeling guilty that this lovely yarn was sitting unused, then I found the Down the Line Beanie pattern and I knew that this was the yarn for the job. The contrasting grey yarn was bought as a compliment colour to use in the tricky shawl project so I was ready to start as soon as I downloaded the pattern!

It was another really simple pattern to follow and despite appearing to be complicated – it was surprisingly easy. I really loved making it and just love the way the lines merge together as they reach the crown of the hat! Isn’t it pretty?

Then the huge decision – to pompom or not to pompom?

I hummed and hawed for a while, and finally decided it needed a pompom just to finish it off and to make full use of that gorgeous skein of hand dyed yarn – so thanks to a great freebie pompom maker from Simply Crochet magazine, I got winding and lo and behold, I had a pompom!

I’m so pleased with how my two new hats turned out – I now have a choice of styles for when I’m heading out for a cold damp morning or evening standing on the football sidelines!

Summer Craft Challenge 2023 : Weeks 4, 5 & 6

Well, I didn’t do too well with keeping my Summer Craft Challenge posts up to date and consistent did I? Life got in the way and all of a sudden we’re over half way through September! So here is a whistle stop dash through the last 3 weeks of my summer craft challenge for 2023 because if I don’t post it, I’ll feel like I failed! I did, however post most days to Instagram so I’ll cut myself a bit of slack!

Here goes…

Week 4 : Saturday 12th August to Friday 18th August

This week began whilst still on holiday in Scotland (Glasgow to be precise) knitting socks, and after a long drive back home (without knitting or crochet that day) I ended up crocheting circles back at home in Manchester!

It was Granny Square Day on 15th August and I shared this Daisy Granny Square I designed while sitting next to some daisies beside the water in Argyll the previous week…

I hope to be sharing more about this square, along with some others I’ve come up with in the coming months.

Week 5 : Saturday 19th August to Friday 25th August

Work was nearing completion on my Potato Field Shawl this week including whilst watching the Lionesses in the World Cup Final. Plus I discovered this haul of Granny Squares when I opened a bag I hadn’t looked though for a while. I think I feel another project coming on!

Week 6 & a bit – Saturday 26th August to Tuesday 3rd September

And we made it! Schools went back for my youngest 2 on Wednesday 4th September – we survived the long summer break with creativity along the way. I also managed to completely finish my Potato Field Shawl. I’m really pleased with it. You can find the pattern details for it here my rainbow colours stripes were made with yarn bought at Yarndale last year from Cuddlebums Yarn.

By this point I had just turned the heel of the sock I was knitting – I’m pleased to say I got it finished in time for Eldest to take away to university with him. I used yarn by West Yorkshire Spinners in Peacock and followed Winwick Mum’s Basic Sock pattern. This is my third pair to date…. I know there will be more!

I’m not sure whether he’ll wear them in public but at least they’ll keep his feet warm in bed if he needs them!

Thanks for following me on my annual Summer Craft Challenge. It’s been fun and much needed respite in this my first summer ‘holiday’ back in structured employment. It’s been a juggle at times balancing work, children and sanity, but we just about got there. Creativity is almost always the answer for me when things get tricky – failing that there’s chocolate!

Summer Craft Challenge 2023 : Weeks 2 & 3

Hello there, this time last week I was driving north to Scotland so didn’t get round to posting before now… so here’s a look back at my last 2 weeks of crafting.

Day 8 : Saturday 29th July

It was Black Sheep Wools’ 40th birthday party yesterday & today, so I popped along to join the celebration.

Eek, there I am… I may have made one or two purchases while I was there…

It didn’t leave much time for making though…

Day 9 : Sunday 30th July

I just felt inspired to make a daisy, can’t say why – it just leapt off my hook!

Day 10 : Monday 31st July

I ended the month on a high, almost exactly a year after I started it, I finished my Dragonfly River MAL shawl by Heather at Keep Calm & Crochet On and Kitey The Yarn Whisperer. Isn’t it lovely? I have no idea why I left it almost finished for so long!

Day 11 : Tuesday 1st August

Sticking with the circular theme…

Day 12 : Wednesday 2nd August

A very uninspiring circle was all I managed today…

Day 13 : Thursday 3rd August

A very busy day today, work, housework and preparations for a family holiday (yay!) meant not much crochet time…

Day 14 : Friday 4th August

I’m trying and trying to square my circle but my brain won’t work and I’m not giving in and looking up a pattern. That’s enough for today.

Day 15 : Saturday 5th August

I didn’t manage much ‘craft’ today it was a long day of driving from Manchester to the west coast of Scotland. It was a day of firsts as I drove onto a car ferry for the first time!

Day 16 : Sunday 6th August

My crochet corner for the afternoon

I felt inspired by the Scottish sunshine in the garden of our holiday let to make a sunflower. What a fabulous spot! There’s a very good chance I won’t want to leave…

Day 18 : Tuesday 8th August

It was such a beautiful day, I felt inspired by my surroundings and wanted to create a little crochet square to celebrate it. It also gave me the perfect excuse to visit a lovely yarn shop called Jinty & Baa in the village of Kirn near Dunoon to buy some yarn to make the water/loch section of my square.

If you ever find yourself in the area, I would highly recommend a visit. It’s really well stocked with yarn, fabric and other needlecraft supplies.

Day 19 : Wednesday 9th August

Nothing to see here… just an embarrassing mother sitting on a historical monument knitting socks 😂. A cruise on the Waverley Paddle Steamer brought us to Tarbet, and we climbed up to see the castle.

Day 20 : Thursday 10th August

Beach day meant sock knitting on the beach – ignore the grey sky – it was deceptively warm even the water was! It was beautiful.

Day 21 : Friday 11th August

Our last full day in the Kyles of Bute before heading onwards to Glasgow. The boys decided to have a kick around on the neighbouring shinty pitch near to where we were staying (I managed a few rows before being roped in as goal keeper). I imagine this will be last of my spectacular backdrops for a while!

Summer Craft Challenge 2023 : Week 1

My first ever Summer Craft Challenge in 2016

Hello there, here’s the first installment of my Summer Craft Challenge for this year. In case you missed my last post or are new to the blog, back in 2016, when we lived in Gibraltar and I was a full-time stay at home Mum to three young boys, I was staring down the barrel of a 10 week long summer school holiday.

Whilst I loved being at home with my boys, the prospect of entertaining them for 10 weeks filled me with slight trepidation, so in order to force myself to spend a bit of time each day doing something that gave me joy, I set myself the challenge of doing something crafty every single day. I started it, not knowing if I’d be able to achieve my target, but I did. I also amazed myself at how much I actually created.

So, each summer since then (apart from in 2020) I have repeated my challenge – some years have been better than others! Here is Week 1 of this year’s challenge:

Day 1 : Saturday 22nd July

I started off my day with some calm crochet before the storm that was about to be a 12th birthday party and sleep over…. (should read ‘not-much-sleep’ over). I sat in my pjs as the rest of the house was quiet and hooked up a few rows on the prototype of a crochet commission I’m currently working on.

I also managed some crochet while I sat and waited for the birthday boy and his friends to finish their Laser Quest session!

Day 2 : Sunday 23rd July

Sunday was a quiet one. Once our guests had departed and the house had been returned to ‘normal’ I spent a lot of time just sitting and crocheting (and not feeling guilty about it due to the lack of sleep the night before).

Day 3 : Monday 24th July

No time for a long lazy day on the sofa on Monday, back to work for me but at least it was a nice sunny evening when I took Youngest to football training. I took my project with me, sat on a bench with a couple of other football Mums and chatted while I hooked – it was very pleasant!

Day 4 : Tuesday 25th July

I can’t show you what I hooked on Tuesday as it’s for a top secret project but when I saw these two balls of yarn side by side I was sent on a trip down memory lane to my childhood and some chewy mints called Pacers. Do you remember Pacers?

Day 5 : Wednesday 26th July

Time for a bit of non-commission crochet for a change. I picked up this shawl I’ve been working on for a while, my aim is to get this completed over this challenge – there’s really not much left to do, but I keep doing a bit and putting it down – it’s taking forever!

Day 6 : Thursday 27th July

It was a super busy day full of Zoom meetings for me, then a hectic evening later so I knew my crochet time would be limited. I opted to crochet during one of the 15 minute comfort breaks in the midst of my working day – it’s all looking a bit black though isn’t it?!

Day 7 : Friday 28th July

I did such a lot of crochet on Friday but alas I cannot share it. What I can share is this cute bunny who was completed exactly a week ago ready to move in with his new family 🩵. I started him at a Crochet Sanctuary away day in March (the same one I made my Mindful Mandala at which was featured in my previous post), and I held off finishing him until his new owner had safely arrived – I’m pleased to say baby & and bunny have met and are getting on together just fine!

Anyone fancy a Summer Craft Challenge?

Hello there, just popping in to say thank you for all the kind comments on my previous post, it’s much appreciated. 🩷

This is the ‘Mindful Mandala’ I made way back in March at a wonderful Crochet Sanctuary day. I didn’t post a photo at the time as we were in the midst of everything else that was going on. It was a wonderful day of yarny fun at a difficult time.

I don’t know about you, but on the whole, crochet really helps me when things are tricky. I often turn to creativity as a way of putting a positive spin on difficult days, and that’s why back in 2016, I set myself a summer craft challenge. I was staring down the barrel of a 9 or 10 week-long school summer holiday in Gibraltar with 3 young children to entertain and I was worried I might go a little bit stir crazy.

The challenge forced me to do something crafty every day of that long summer recess and it really worked. I ended up being far more creative than I would otherwise and that did me the world of good.

A few weeks back I was firmly of the mindset that I wasn’t going to do it again this year. Things were still feeling too difficult and now I am working a lot more so my time is very limited. But then I put my last blog post up about where I’ve been for the past 6-7 months and then I published a podcast episode and life began feeling a bit more like it’s ok to have fun now and again. So, with that in mind, and the fact school broke up today for Youngest (and earlier this week for No. 2 son), I guess now’s as good a time as any to kick off a challenge.

As from tomorrow, I shall endeavour to do something crafty every day of the school summer holidays as I have done every year since 2016 (apart from 2020 – owing to the fact we moved country etc!) and as I do it, I’ll document it on Instagram each day and once a week there’ll be a weekly round up here on the blog.

A postcard from a difficult time

Hi, I’ve been thinking about how I could find the words to write this post for months. Life has been incredibly difficult since New Year for us as a family. At times it’s felt like we’d slipped into a parallel universe thinking at some point I’d wake up and be back in my ‘old’ life.

I don’t want to go into details about what’s happened, suffice to say it’s been health related and we have lost a very special person in our lives. Grief is a tricky thing to navigate and I’m on that road now with my boys. Life will never be the same for us but we have to look to the future now.

I have always been a passionate advocate for creativity helping me in tough times, and it truly has in the past. This time though, perhaps my feelings were too big so my creativity and need to make just slipped away. I ‘had’ to make a few crochet items for a commission I was working on and that forced me to get lost (temporarily) in the mindless rhythm of crocheting, but I can honestly say that in the past six months I have probably crocheted for pleasure a couple of times – the most recent of which was last night, which got my thinking about my blog & podcast.

I had big plans for the podcast this year – which haven’t happened. In fact there is still an episode which was due to be published in early January just as our difficulties first arose. I have felt a bit guilty at times because I have a lovely audience out there (some of whom have contacted me directly to check on me – which is lovely) and I always prided myself on being reliable and regular in my podcast episodes. I don’t like to let people down.

In addition to what we’ve been dealing with emotionally, I have had to take on more paying work recently to support my family and that has eaten into my spare time which in the past would have been spent having lovely chats with fabulous creative people about their lives for the podcast. The impact this additional pressure would have on the podcast going forwards has worried me, as it’s a big part of who I am, but the podcast doesn’t bring any financial reward – only emotional and in fact, it actually costs me money to make.

With this in mind, I think the time has come to face up to the future of Making Stitches. The plain facts are that my time is a lot more limited nowadays and will be for the foreseeable future but I would like to continue with my podcast and blogging adventures albeit in a reduced manner. So hopefully, in the next few days, that outstanding episode of Making Stitches Podcast due out in January will make a late appearance and some more ‘stand alone’ episodes will follow later in the year.

If there is still anyone out there still following my blog who hasn’t disappeared since I hung up my blogging hat in January, thank you for hanging on. And to everyone who has been checking on me in my absence – thank you, it’s nice to know I wasn’t forgotten. Please bear with me, and I will pop back again from time to time, hopefully with happier news and some colorful crochet…
