2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 41) Regal

This is my photo challenge entry for last week’s word prompt (as I got confused and published the wrong one – you will be getting two this week!).

On Sunday, the old style of pound coin (left) went out of legal tender, it’s been replaced by the two tone coin (on the right) which is supposed to be more difficult to forge.

Unfortunately, a shortage of the new-style pound coins in Gibraltar means that we are still using our version of the old coins which were minted for Gibraltar. They will continue to remain in circulation until March next year.

The result has been a fair bit of confusion and the need to double check your change in shops here. So far I have had 3 defunct UK pound coins given to me in change since  Monday…

2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 45) Walk

(Edit: whoops – I seem to have published this out of sync! It’s only Week 41!!! Week 41 & 42 will come next week)

Worthington Lakes, near Wigan, Lancashire
I do like a good walk. If you are a regular visitor to the blog, you will probably know that my favourite kind of walk, is the green woodland variety. However, here in Gibraltar, green woodland is a bit thin on the ground, so the Med Steps are my walk of choice mostly over here.
Med Steps, Gibraltar
This is the blog post I wrote about our lovely woodland walk around Worthington Lakes near Wigan, which features in the top photo.

I have written many posts about my walks, in fact I have a whole series of posts on my ‘Strolls around Gibraltar’. In June 2016, I took a walk up the Med Steps and got to see it looking completely different as I climbed up through the cloud / mist, you can read about it here.

2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 40) Rust

I was scratching my head this week trying to figure out what to use for my ‘rust’ picture. (I’m assuming you have no interest in our rusty gate!) Then suddenly it struck me on my walk this morning.

These rings can be found all over the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar. They were used by the military in days gone by to haul cannons up to their positions around the top of the Rock.

I cannot imagine how difficult that must have been – it’s hard enough hauling myself up there. The strength and ingenuity of the military is plain to see all over Gibraltar, with the fortifications and tunnels. We have the Royal Engineers to thank for much of them.

2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 39) Shadow

This has got to be my favourite ‘shadow’ picture of all time, taken on the beach near Marbella a couple of years ago.

2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 38) Orderly

This week’s photo challenge was a real challenge for me… I’m not the most orderly person (friends and family will agree I’m sure). Anyway, while on a walk on the Upper Rock this week, I looked down upon the small boat marina and thought it looked very orderly, all the neat rows…

Yesterday I was parking close to the marina and took the top photo. Not only did the small boats oblige in their orderliness, eagle eyed readers may also notice that a British Airways plane was coming in to land at Gibraltar airport and lined itself up perfectly between the Disney Cruise ship and Yacht ‘A’ which was docked too.

2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 37) Beach

Gibraltar’s lucky enough to have some lovely beaches. My two favourites have to be Sandy Bay (above) and Catalan Bay (below).

This week’s photo challenge reminded me of a post I wrote about Gibraltar’s beaches last year… A stroll around Gibraltar No.14 : Beaches

2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 36) Found

While we were on holiday in France a couple of weeks ago, we found some treasure… conkers!

The first one was spotted next to the Aeroscopia museum outside Toulouse (above), but we hit the jackpot in Carcassonne…

They are now drying out on our window ledge ready to be drilled, stringed up and for battle to commence.

For those of you reading this in the UK, conkers (or horse chestnuts) won’t seem a big deal, but they don’t grow in Gibraltar, so the Littlest two Postcards have missed out on such autumnal delights. Roll on sore fingers and cries of ‘cheat’!

2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 35) Sharp

My ‘sharp’ is sharp focus. This beautiful dahlia was sitting looking stunning in a floral border around the fountain at the heart of the Jardin du Grand Rond in Toulouse on Monday morning.

The heavy rain from the night before had left drops all over the petals.

The focus on this photo, like so many others I take regularly blows my mind as to the quality of camera I have in my pocket every day.

I am of course talking about my phone.

2017 Weekly photo challenge (week 34) Fold

I was completely stumped with this week’s photo challenge until I had the first crêpe of our French holiday! It was delicious!

2017 Weekly photo challenge (Week 33) Thrift

This week’s challenge is ‘thrift’ and I have to admit finding it difficult to capture it in a photo. I could argue I’m thrifty hanging onto old clothes and bits and bobs which might come in useful for future craft projects – others (i.e. Mr Postcard and my parents) would argue that it’s because I’m a hoarder…

So here’s a photo of one of Gibraltar’s charity or ‘thrift’ shops, that way I don’t need to shame myself with my crafty stash of ‘junk’.
